What is it for?
Changes the facial skeleton at chin level, improving its aesthetics
What does it mean?
Chin bone movements are obtained through a controlled fracture of the anterior mandible and its fixation with plates and screws, allowing correction of lateral deviation or reduced or exaggerated projection, by changing the position and dimensions of the chin
Procedure time
1h30
Other procedures that can be associated
Orthognathic surgery
Type of anaesthesia
General anaesthesia
Scars
The scars are inside the mouth, unnoticeable
Hospitalization
Usually one day in hospital
Recovery
Swelling of the lower face is expected for a few days, gradually reducing in the following weeks. You can return to work after 5-7 days and resume physical activity at 4 weeks
Most frequent problems and risks
One of the most significant (although infrequent) risk of genioplasty is lower lip numbness, usually temporary if there is only blunt trauma, but it may be permanent or have protracted recovery in the event of section of the inferior alveolar nerve or mental nerve, which are directly related to the mandible (relatively rare situation). Other complications of genioplasty are infection, fracture or displacement of plates or screws (which can be removed after a few months if necessary), injury of dental roots or teeth, bone resorption
Longevity
Usually definitive
