Mommy Makeover
Mommy Makeover
A personalised surgical plan after pregnancy
What is it?
A Mommy Makeover combines different surgical procedures to address changes in the breasts, abdomen and body contour after pregnancy.
Each plan is adapted to the woman’s body, priorities and individual needs. The procedures may be performed together or in separate stages after an individual consultation.

Mastopexy
Breast lift
What is it?
A breast lift, or mastopexy, is a surgical procedure that corrects breast sagging (ptosis) associated with ageing or breasts that have become more empty after weight loss or pregnancy. It reshapes the breast tissue to restore breast form, repositions the nipple to a suitable height and removes excess skin stretched by pregnancy or weight changes.
When additional breast volume is also desired, mastopexy may be combined with the placement of a silicone implant. The technique depends on the degree of ptosis and is selected after assessment during the consultation.
When the breast already has sufficient volume, it may be possible to lift the breast and use the patient’s own breast tissue to increase projection, in a technique known as an “auto-prosthesis”, without silicone implants. The most suitable option can only be defined accurately during a consultation.

Breast Reduction
Reduction mammoplasty
What is it?
Breast reduction surgery, also called reduction mammoplasty, involves removing part of the breast tissue and skin to create a more harmonious breast shape adapted to the woman’s body and to reposition the nipple closer to its ideal position. Liposuction of the lateral extensions of the breast is often added to the technique to improve the result.
Breast hypertrophy can be a social stigma and, in more severe cases, may be associated with back and neck pain and marks from bra straps on the shoulders. Maintaining an appropriate body weight is important for greater surgical safety and more reliable, long-lasting results.

Abdominoplasty
Reshaping of the abdominal contour
What is it?
Abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure that removes skin and fat between the umbilicus and the pubic region and then repositions the umbilicus in its anatomical location. It can remove folds, wrinkles, scars or stretch marks within the excised skin and improve the frontal contour through removal of skin and fat and, when appropriate, complementary liposuction of the flanks.
When abdominal projection in profile is caused by stretching of the abdominal muscles, often after pregnancy, muscle plication may be performed. The operation can also rejuvenate the pubic region and create a smoother abdominal contour, with a scar that tends to remain concealed by underwear.
When the aesthetic changes affect only the lower abdomen and are not sufficient to justify a formal abdominoplasty, a miniabdominoplasty may be appropriate. In this variant, excess skin and fat below the umbilicus can be removed without repositioning the umbilicus, and complementary liposuction and muscle plication may be added.

Liposuction
Body-contour reshaping
What is it?
Liposuction, also known as lipoplasty or liposculpture, is a surgical procedure in which fat is aspirated through cannulas introduced through small openings in the skin. It can reduce body-fat volume when moderate amounts are treated; removing too much may leave excess skin and subsequent laxity. It should therefore be performed by an accredited plastic surgeon and should not be regarded as a simplistic procedure.
Liposuction is not a substitute when there is excess or redundant skin. In those cases, open surgical techniques such as abdominoplasty may be more appropriate. Liposuction is used to treat accumulated fat deposits that are resistant to diet and weight loss, within the expected limits of postoperative skin elasticity and retraction. A balanced weight, ideally close to the ideal weight, is desirable.
The most commonly treated areas include the abdomen and flanks, upper arms, back, the side of the buttocks and hips, thighs, knees, legs, and the neck and jowl area. The aspirated fat can be processed and reintroduced into other areas of the body to increase volume and improve contour, including the breasts.

Frequently asked questions
Answers to common questions about planning a Mommy Makeover and the procedures it may include.
What is a Mommy Makeover?
It is a personalised surgical plan that combines procedures to address changes in the breasts, abdomen and body contour after pregnancy.
Which procedures may be included in a Mommy Makeover?
Depending on individual needs, the plan may include mastopexy, breast augmentation with implants, breast reduction, abdominoplasty, correction of stretched abdominal muscles, liposuction and breast fat grafting.
Do all the procedures have to be performed during the same operation?
No. The procedures may be performed together or in separate stages after an individual consultation.
How is the surgical plan selected?
The plan is adapted to each woman’s body, priorities and individual needs and can only be defined accurately after assessment during a consultation.
What does a mastopexy correct?
Mastopexy corrects breast sagging, reshapes breast tissue, repositions the nipple and removes excess skin stretched by pregnancy or weight changes.
Are implants always required in a mastopexy?
No. When there is sufficient breast volume, the patient’s own breast tissue may be used to increase projection. When additional volume is desired, mastopexy may be combined with an implant.
When may breast reduction be appropriate?
It may be appropriate when very large breasts cause disproportion, physical discomfort or emotional impact, including back or neck pain and marks from bra straps on the shoulders.
What scars may result from breast surgery?
Depending on breast size, shape and the required technique, there may be a scar around the areola combined with a vertical scar and, in some cases, a horizontal scar along the inframammary fold, forming an inverted T.
What can an abdominoplasty correct?
It can remove excess skin and fat, folds, wrinkles, scars or stretch marks contained within the excised skin, improve the abdominal contour and reposition the umbilicus.
Can abdominoplasty correct stretched abdominal muscles?
Yes. When abdominal projection is caused by stretched muscles, often after pregnancy, plication of the abdominal muscles may be performed.
What is the difference between abdominoplasty and liposuction?
Liposuction reduces fat deposits through cannulas but does not replace surgical skin removal when excess or redundant skin is present. Abdominoplasty removes skin and fat and may also include muscle plication.
Can fat removed during liposuction be reused?
Yes. Aspirated fat can be processed and reintroduced into other areas of the body to increase volume and improve contour, including the breasts.
How does recovery vary between the different procedures?
Recovery depends on the procedures performed. After breast surgery, return to work may be possible after about 5–7 days without physical effort and more intense exercise from 6 weeks. After abdominoplasty, return to work may take 1–3 weeks and exercise is generally resumed after 6 weeks. After liposuction, work may be resumed after 2–3 days and physical activity at 4 weeks.
What are the main risks of the procedures that may form part of the plan?
Risks vary by procedure and may include wound-healing problems, haematoma, infection, seroma, sensitivity changes, contour irregularities and thromboembolism. When breast implants are used, additional risks include displacement, rupture, capsular contracture and the rare risk of BIA-ALCL.
Can a future pregnancy or weight changes affect the results?
Yes. A future pregnancy, significant weight changes and age-related loss of tissue elasticity may alter the results of breast, abdominal and body-contour surgery.
