Mentoplasty with Implant

PurposeImproves the projection and contour of a receding chin.
Duration1 hour
AnaesthesiaLocal or general anaesthesia

What is it?

Chin implants are solid and appropriately shaped to define the contour and volume of the chin. They may be made of silicone or MEDPOR. Through a surgical approach that leaves an easily concealed scar — inside the mouth or beneath the chin — the implant is placed next to the bone and fixed with screws or sutures.

Compared with volume augmentation using hyaluronic acid or fat grafting, an implant provides a more defined shape, with more clearly demarcated features such as the mandibular border or chin, and offers a permanent result, unlike hyaluronic acid.

Dermal Fillers

PurposeIncreases the volume of the chin and jawline up to the angle of the mandible.
Duration15 minutes
AnaesthesiaTopical or regional anaesthesia

What is it?

The injection of fillers is a non-surgical procedure — unlike fat grafting — that uses filler substances to improve wrinkles, furrows and irregularities or increase volume. More superficial fillers may also improve skin hydration. In clinical practice, hyaluronic acid, a non-permanent filler, is preferred because of its better safety profile.

Several brands are available, including Restylane, FillMed Art Filler and Juvederm. They vary in viscosity, water absorption capacity and molecular characteristics, which affect the appropriate injection depth to achieve the best results without visible papules and with maximised durability.

Aesthetic indications include age-related loss of facial volume, particularly loss of cheek fat, deep furrows from the nose to the corners of the mouth and, in some cases, lines between the lower eyelids and cheeks. Hyaluronic acid is also commonly used for lip or chin augmentation and can smooth irregularities of the nose, improving its shape.

Fat Grafting

PurposeImproves the volume and contour of the chin and jawline using fat harvested from another area of the patient’s own body. In some cases, it can improve skin quality and texture.
DurationDepends on the treated area and whether other procedures are combined; it may range from 30 minutes to 2 hours.
AnaesthesiaGeneral anaesthesia, except for minor procedures, which may be performed under local anaesthesia with or without sedation.

What is it?

Fat grafting, also known as fat transfer, fat injections or lipofilling, is a surgical procedure — unlike hyaluronic acid treatment — that uses the patient’s own fat to fill irregularities and grooves or increase volume.

Other aesthetic indications include age-related loss of facial volume, particularly loss of cheek fat, deep furrows from the nose to the corners of the mouth and, in some cases, lines between the lower eyelids and cheeks. It is also commonly used for lip augmentation.

Fat grafting can also smooth irregularities resulting from poorly performed liposuction. Volume enhancement of the breast or buttocks — including the Brazilian Butt Lift — with the patient’s own fat is currently one of the most requested aesthetic procedures.

The fat required for limited liposculpture is obtained through one or more incisions measuring 3 to 5 mm and is usually harvested from the abdomen or thigh.

It has the additional advantage of complementing liposuction in other body areas by using the removed fat.

Genioplasty / Mentoplasty

PurposeChanges the facial skeleton at chin level, improving its appearance.
Duration1 hour 30 minutes
AnaesthesiaGeneral anaesthesia

What is it?

Chin bone movement is achieved through a controlled fracture of the anterior mandible followed by fixation with plates and screws. This allows correction of lateral deviation or reduced or excessive projection by changing the position and dimensions of the chin.

Frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about chin and mandibular treatments.

What is a chin implant used for?

It is used to improve the projection and contour of a receding chin.

What does chin implant surgery involve?

A solid silicone or MEDPOR implant is placed next to the chin bone and fixed with screws or sutures.

Where is the scar from chin implant surgery?

The scar may be located inside the mouth or beneath the chin, in an easily concealed area.

What is recovery like after chin implant surgery?

Return to work for light activity may be possible after 2–3 days, although some swelling may remain for about 3 weeks.

What can hyaluronic acid treat in the chin area?

It can increase the volume of the chin and jawline up to the angle of the mandible.

Are dermal fillers a surgical treatment?

No. Fillers are injected in a non-surgical procedure; the stated clinical preference is non-permanent hyaluronic acid because of its safety profile.

How long does a hyaluronic acid treatment take?

The treatment takes approximately 15 minutes and is performed in the medical office.

How long do chin fillers last?

Duration depends on the depth, location and product used and may range from 6 to 18 months.

What is fat grafting of the chin?

It is a surgical procedure that uses the patient’s own fat to fill irregularities or increase the volume of the chin and jawline.

Where is the fat harvested for fat grafting?

It is usually harvested from the abdomen or thigh through one or more incisions measuring 3 to 5 mm.

Does fat grafting require a hospital stay?

This depends on the extent of the procedure and any combined procedures; it may be performed as an outpatient procedure or require 1 day in hospital.

Is the result of fat grafting permanent?

Approximately 30–50% of the grafted fat may be reabsorbed over 6 to 12 months. The result then generally becomes final and permanent, although major weight changes can alter the volume.

What does genioplasty involve?

It involves a controlled fracture of the anterior mandible, repositioning of the chin and fixation with plates and screws.

What is recovery like after genioplasty?

Lower facial swelling is expected for several days. Return to work may be possible after 5–7 days, and physical activity can resume after 4 weeks.

What are the main risks of genioplasty?

Risks include lower-lip numbness, injury to the inferior alveolar or mental nerve, infection, plate or screw problems, dental injury, overcorrection or undercorrection, and bone resorption.
